English as a Second Language (ESL)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program helps students from other language backgrounds acquire social and academic English. Students who speak a language other than English at home receive a language screening when they enroll at Glenwood. The screening assesses their English proficiency in four domains: listening, speaking, reading and writing. If students qualify for the ESL program, they receive services based on their level of English. For beginning students, pull-out classes are offered in which students leave the classroom for a period of time to work with an ESL teacher. For more advanced students, we offer co-teaching services in which the ESL teachers work with students in their classrooms. The ESL teachers are also available to consult with classroom teachers about effective teaching practices for English language learners.
